On arrival at Bathurst Island, meet your local guide who will take you on a journey through the progressive, modern day Aboriginal community of Nguiu (Wurrumiyanga). Visit the museum with its interesting displays of traditional art and depictions of the Tiwi dreamtime stories and the its unique Tiwi style Catholic Church. Hear about the colourful history of the early mission days and learn how the Tiwi people have blended their culture with Christianity. Be taken through the successful Arts and Crafts Centres and see where the artist’s work. During morning tea, we spend time with some Tiwi Ladies enjoying billy tea and damper while they work on their weaving and painting. Your guides and the ladies also demonstrate their totem dances and perform a smoking ceremony to bless the visitors and explain the meanings behind them. Learn some of the complex rituals associated with the Pukamani (burial ceremony). Set out for a scenic drive through the wilderness of Bathurst Island. Enjoy lunch and visit a local waterhole and pristine beach environs. Learn about traditional bush tuckers, bush medicine and natural fibres and dyes on your return to the community before your return to Darwin.

Explore one of the world’s greatest nature reserves and World Heritage Area listed for its cultural and natural heritage. The name Kakadu derived from the Gagudju speaking people, a language spoken in the park until the turn of the 20th century. In Ubirr, climb up through the ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries, believed to be 20,000 years old, to the lookout for a spectacular view over the surrounding wetlands. Included in today is Jumping Crocodile Cruise, Kadadu National Park and the Marawuddi Art Gallery.

This morning learn about bush medicine, a presentation teaching about the use of the plants with an interpreter. Then we head to the airport for flight to Cairns (flight not included). Take your private transfer from the airport with your assistant and then have the rest of day at leisure. Go explore and taste your way through the city. It’s home to the iconic Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics World Heritage Rainforest, but the city of Cairns itself is also a must-visit. You'll find brilliant cafés, bustling markets and plenty of beaches nearby.
