After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Jerash, home to the ruins of the Greco-Roman city of Gerasa, also known as Antioch on the Golden River. Explore the impressive remains, including the Corinthium Column, Hadrian's Arch, the circus-hippodrome, and the two large temples dedicated to Zeus and Artemis. Don't miss the nearly unique oval Forum, surrounded by a fine colonnade, the long colonnaded street (cardo), two theatres (the Large South Theatre and the smaller North Theatre), two baths, and a scattering of small temples, all enclosed by an almost complete circuit of city walls. Afterward, drive back to Amman for a guided tour of the capital city. Amman, historically known as Rabbath Ammon or Rabat Amon by the Ammonites, was later conquered by the Assyrians, Persians, and Greek Macedonians. Ptolemy II Philadelphus, the Macedonian ruler of Egypt, renamed it Philadelphia. Key sites include the Citadel, the Archaeological Museum, the Roman Theatre, and the Folklore Museum. Following breakfast and check-out, you will embark on a journey to Madaba, a city celebrated for its remarkable Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics. Your exploration of this historic city includes visits to the Mimar Institute of Mosaic Art and Restoration, followed by a charming walking tour along Artisan Street. You'll discover the Archaeological Park, home to several Byzantine churches, ancient Roman road remnants, and the historic Martyr's Church. A highlight of your visit will be the Saint George Church, housing its famous 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land. Your cultural immersion continues at the Madaba Museum, an intimate collection housed within traditional heritage buildings connected by a picturesque courtyard, and the 19th-century John the Baptist Church, where you can explore fascinating subterranean chambers and ongoing excavations. After breakfast set out to explore the magnificent Petra site. Petra is a historical and archaeological city renowned for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Also known as the Rose City due to the color of the stone from which it is carved, Petra was the capital city of the Nabateans and is now a symbol of Jordan and a UNESCO world heritage site. . In 1812, Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt introduced Petra to the Western world. It was famously described as "a rose-red city half as old as time". The impressive eastern entrance leads steeply down through a dark, narrow gorge called the Siq ("the shaft"), a natural geological feature formed from a deep split in the sandstone rocks, serving as a waterway flowing into Wadi Musa. At the end of the Siq stands Petra's most elaborate ruin, Al Khazneh (popularly known as "the Treasury"). A little farther from the Treasury is a massive theatre, strategically placed to bring the greatest number of tombs into view. As the valley opens out into the plain, the site of the city is revealed with striking effect. The amphitheatre has been cut into the hillside and into several of the tombs during its construction. Petra is home to hundreds of elaborate rock-cut tombs with intricate carvings, obelisks, temples, sacrificial altars, and colonnaded streets. High above, overlooking the valley, is the impressive Ad-Deir Monastery, which can be reached by climbing a flight of 800 rock-cut steps. After exploring, return to your Petra hotel for some rest. At 8:30 PM, attend the enchanting Petra by Night show. Operating on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, this experience involves walking through the Siq to the Khazneh along a candle-lit path and enjoying the haunting music of the Bedouins at the Treasury.
