Your Lapland adventure starts in Kirkenes in the far north of Norway, a small city situated at the mouth of the large Varangerfjord. You will have 2 nights’ accommodation here. During your stay, there will be a visit to the Arctic Snow Hotel which is a hotel totally made of ice. However the temperature is kept at an even -4 C/25 F which is a lot warmer than outside. Facilities include an outdoor hot tub and a lakeside sauna. Ice fishing, ice sculpting and snowshoeing are among the activities available. You will have dinner here before returning to your own hotel.
Next cross the border into Finland to Saariselka, a small village surrounded by untouched wilderness and mountain landscapes. You will have 2 nights here. On arrival, enjoy a visit to the National Museum of Finnish Sami. Sami are the indigenous Laplanders. The museum is a storehouse of spiritual and material culture of the Finnish Sami. Its main purpose is to support the identity and the cultural self esteem of the Sami.
The following day is free to try one of the many optional tours such as a snowmobile safari, a reindeer safari, a husky safari or a Northern Lights safari.
Head south to the village of Sinetta which is the location of the Arctic Snow Hotel where you will spend one night in a private glass-roofed igloo. Hot drinks are always available as is an open fireplace. The temperature in the Snow Hotel’s rooms is between 0 and -5C/ 32 and 24F. regardless of the outdoor temperature. Weather permitting, you can marvel at the amazing Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) and the millions of stars right from your bed. The Aurora Borealis alarm service alerts guests to appearances of the Northern Lights.
Your final stop is at Rovaniemi, known as the home town of Santa Claus, where you will spend the next 2 nights. The rest of the day is at leisure and again the many optional tours such as a snowmobile safari, a reindeer safari, a husky safari or a Northern Lights safari are available.
The following day brings a tour to the Santa Claus Village where you will have free time to experience this unique attraction including the possibility of having a quick visit with Santa Claus himself. In the afternoon, you will travel to Kemi to board an icebreaker and spend 4 hours watching this vessel do its job breaking the ice in Gulf of Bothnia and have a tour of the ship.
Your Winter Lapland comes to an end the next morning.
