There’s more to Madagascar than just lemurs! Though these adorable creatures certainly aren’t in short supply on this 12-day round trip from Antananarivo.
Transfer to Andasibe National Park, home to Madagascar’s largest lemurs, the Indri. You may also come across endemic tenrec, chameleon and bird species. Visit an Andasibe village for a glimpse of life among the local people. Further south, the rice fields of Antsirabe create a landscape reminiscent of Asia, while the city of Ambatolampy was founded by Norwegians and adds a distinctly European influence to this unique agricultural area. This is also the heart of Madagascar’s beer industry.
Ambositra is a city defined by wood carving, which is evident in its ornate architecture. Return to the forest in Ranomafana National Park, a World Heritage Site filled with various species of lemur, chameleon and other animals. Enjoy the island’s unique wines at Ambalavao, where winemakers have defied a difficult climate to continue a tradition left by priests and monks. You’ll also visit Anteimoro Paper Factory, where the last traces of Arabian influence on Madagascar can be found.
The landmarks and colours of Isalo National Park fire the imagination, with sandstone formations such as ‘the tortoise’, ‘the masks’ and ‘the crocodiles’. End your day with a refreshing dip in a natural swimming pool. As you head south, the landscape transforms into an eerie desert, marked by cacti and a mangrove lined coast. Beach-side Ifaty offers you a wide variety of excursions. Explore the lives of local fishermen, as well as the extensive plant and animal life populating the area. Snorkelers and divers will also love the large coral reef just offshore.
Antananarivo, or ‘Tana’ for short, is the capital of Madagascar and like much of the country, lies well off the beaten tourist track. As such, there are few tourist attractions – but this in itself is the attraction for many visitors! An afternoon at leisure gives you a chance to see everyday city life on this fascinating island before your departure.
