Xunantunich in Maya is "The Stone Maiden". The site is about 30 minutes from San Ignacio and is only accessible by taking a hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River. Xunantunich is one of the most popular Mayan sites in Belize and was one of the first to be excavated and opened to the public. Standing atop "El Castillo", the largest pyramid at the site, you will have a panoramic view of western and eastern Belize.

At the Cockscomb Basin Jaguars, not people, rule the domain of the Wildlife Sanctuary. Located in southern Belize, this sacred parcel of nature is one of Belize's most fascinating areas. Its jungle - like terrain in the Stann Creek District sprawls below the jagged peaks of the Maya Mountain's Cockscomb Range, and ranges east towards the sea. Declared a national reserve and a NO HUNTING area in 1984, it was established to protect the large jaguar population and other resident wildlife. The lush jungle of the cockscomb is also a birder's paradise. Over 290 species have been recorded, including the scarlet macaw. Also home to numerous species of reptiles and amphibians such as the red-eyed frog, boa constrictor, iguana and the deadly fer de lance.
